I live and work in a beachfront log cabin on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia). Color cues for my quilts often come from what I see outside my studio window: a small patch of brilliant green seaweed against the gray mudflats at low tide; cerise blossoms on leafless salmonberry bushes promising the end of winter; scattered chanterelle mushrooms glowing like light bulbs on the dark forest floor. Here color accentuates, it does not overwhelm.
My designs are often inspired by seeing things that make me think, "That could be a quilt." It might be a view from a boat, a photograph, a grid-like arrangement of objects, or another piece of art. I create my work to release the quilt hidden within.
Making art quilts complements my other work. Since 1980 I have written freelance art magazine articles, for several years I managed a textile arts gallery in Minneapolis, and currently I curate yearly exhibitions at the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate.
Commissions welcomed.
